In: ACM/IEEE 25th International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and Systems: Companion Proceedings. ACM. 2022. PDFBIB DownloadDetails

A process of a multi-level model creation follows typically the topdown approach, i.e., it requires first defining concepts and relations on the highest classification levels, which only then can be used to create concepts on the lower ones. Empirical insights into the process of multi-level model creation suggest however, that this strategy may be counter-intuitive and challenging, especially for non-experts. This paper addresses this problem by focusing on the idea of flexible multi-level model creation, understood as an intertwined application of top-down and bottom-up strategies. As a first step towards realizing this vision for multi-level models in general, and those created with the XModeler and Flexible MetaModeling and Execution Language (FMMLx) in particular, in this paper, we select a set of relevant multi-level refactoring patterns, adapt them to our approach, and implement them in the supporting tool. We illustrate the flexible creation process using an exemplary scenario.

To support understanding and analysis of sustainability related aspects in organizations (e.g., via an assessment of a product’s life-cycle from the cradle to the grave), various instruments, among others, in the field of conceptual modeling, have been proposed. Although existing tools and languages are, to some extent, indeed supporting the product Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), our investigations show that a hierarchy of Domain-Specific Modeling Languages(DSMLs) is needed to satisfy advanced requirements. In this paper, as an innovation for the field of LCA, we propose an application of multi-level language architecture to design a hierarchy of DSMLs encompassing concepts for LCAs that can be detailed to specific industrial domains and local needs of enterprises. This enables a new generation of instruments allowing users to use and refine concepts, corresponding to their specific needs.

  • Application of Blockchain-based Systems in the Field of Supply Chain Management - a critical analysis (Bachelorarbeit Wirtschaftsinformatik, in Bearbeitung) Details
  • Agility and Business Process Modeling - A Critical Review of Models, Methods and Applications (Bachelorarbeit Wirtschaftsinformatik, in Bearbeitung) Details

Agility and being agile is considered to be a core imperative for enterprises’ success. Being agile is considered to increasingly depend on enterprise’s ability to set up new business processes or to modify existing ones in a dynamic manner, and rapidly adapt its information systems to these process changes. Taking into account the characteristics of agile methods it seems reasonable to assume that agile principles might be useful in Business Process Modeling, too. Thus, the main aim of this thesis is to investigate the eligibility of agile principles and agile methods in the business process modeling field based on the critical analysis of the literature and analysis of available application scenarios. Among others, a question should be answered when the application of agile methods in business process modelling makes sense, as well as what are the resulting benefits and challenges. Also the available tool support should be considered.

    Motivation:

The goal of information logistics is to contribute to reducing information overload, which is perceived as a problem in enterprises. Among many approaches to reduce information overload, modeling and analysis of information demand have been proposed. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the concept of information demand in the context of an enterprise, identify requirements towards its modeling, evaluate existing approaches, and, depending on the type of the thesis (bachelor or master), propose a modeling language or an extension to already existing one(s).

    Motivation:

Recent success stories such as those of Airbnb or Uber have shown clearly that the Sharing Economy has evolved from a niche phenomenon to an independent economic sector. Against this background, it is widely recognised that business models constitute one of the most important factors to create such success stories. The main goal of this thesis is, based on a comprehensive literature study, to analyse existing business models in sharing economy and propose an overarching framework allowing for their classification and generation.

    Motivation:

Speech translation is a process within which spoken phrases are instantly translated and spoken aloud in a second language. Speech translation systems, which typically integrate: speech recognition, machine translation and voice synthesis; enable speakers of different languages to communicate. It thus is of tremendous value for, among others, cross-cultural exchange and global business.

    Description:

The main goal of this bachelor thesis is to critically analyse the maturity and applicability of existing speech-to-speech translation systems. Therefore, the scope of the thesis encompasses identification of applicable technologies, definition of a set of criteria that may be used to compare different solutions as well as identification of challenges that still need to be addressed. The conducted analysis should also allow to formulate a set of recommendations regarding the further development of the field.

  • Recent Advances in Artificial Intelligence: Concepts, Potential for Decision Support, and Development of a New Supporting Framework (Masterarbeit Wirtschaftsinformatik, in Bearbeitung) Details

    Motivation

In recent years, research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) has put forward remarkable results. The public sphere has particularly recognized advances in the areas of autonomous driving, retail recommendation systems, political forecasting, and AIs for strategic games. For example, a few years ago the world champion in the strategic game of Go, one of the few strategic board games where humans used to be stronger than computers, was defeated by an AI system.

Artificial intelligence is also increasingly applied in organizations to support, or even automate, decision making at different levels. But despite growing capabilities of AI technologies, there are still numerous preconditions that have to be fulfilled before AI can be employed to deal with complex organizational problems. Some of these conditions can be traced back to issues that have already been recognized at an earlier stage of AI research in the 1970s, where enthusiastic expectations about, for example, an AI-based "General Problem Solver" (Simon, Newell) did not succeed. Given these difficulties, (IT) managers are facing the challenge of deciding where, and in what form, AI-based systems can be meaningfully introduced in the organization to improve the effectiveness of decision making.

    Description

This thesis is meant to address three goals. First, the thesis should provide a structured and critical overview of key concepts, technologies, and assumptions of artificial intelligence research. This should also involve a brief account of the historical development of the research field. Second, the thesis should critically examine the potentials of AI for the support or even the automation of organizational decision making. This examination should be based on a proper review of insights about conditions and characteristics of real-world organizational decision processes. Finally, the thesis should develop a new framework to support organizations in the preparation or execution of projects meant to introduce AI for purposes of decision support or automation. The specific purpose and nature of the framework can be defined depending on the interests of the student and the focus of the Master's thesis. For example, it would be possible to develop a basic framework with checklists and heuristics to assess whether the introduction of AI makes sense in a given organizational setting. It would also be possible to develop a full-fledged domain-specific modeling language (DSML) to describe the purpose and desired effects of an AI project in the context of a larger enterprise model.

  • Trustworthy storage and management of private contracts: A Case for Distributed Ledger Technologies? Requirements, Use Cases and Potentials. (Bachelorarbeit Wirtschaftsinformatik, in Bearbeitung) Details

    Motivation

In recent years, distributed ledger technologies have gained remarkable attention. Unfortunately, the discussion of the potentials of these technologies often suffers from mystification and/or inappropriate assumptions. This thesis targets a subject that seems to be a convincing case for distributed ledger technologies: those contracts between citizens where an official certification would be out of scope. This is even more the case, as the number of such contracts is likely to increase through growing use of online trading platforms. Based on an elaborate analysis and assessment of distributed ledger technologies, the thesis aims at a comprehensive assessment of their potential to become a common infrastructure for routine contracting between citizens. That includes an outline of the technical infrastructure and corresponding business models as well as the analysis of specific incentives and obstacles for citizens to use respective services.

  • Electronic payment systems: technical foundations, risks and potentials (Bachelorarbeit Wirtschaftsinformatik, in Bearbeitung) Details

    Motivation

Driven by innovations in ICT and in part by societal developments, the means by which we conduct payments is changing – not only in terms of the particular technologies used, such as payment by smart phone or by means of an RFID chip embedded in your banking card – but also in terms of what fundamentally "economic" transactions entail and especially how these economic transactions are carried out. For example. concerning the latter block-chain based technologies such as bitcoin or lightcoin allow us to decentralize economic transactions, i.e. without having to rely on a centralized authority like a bank.

    Description

In this thesis, you first of all explore what, exactly, the characteristics of economic transactions are, and subsequently provide a state of the art of emerging payment system technologies that support and/or enable these characteristics. Going beyond this, you preferably explore different possible scenarios for how electronic payments are carried out in the future, and how these can be potentially enabled or supported by different payment technologies.

  • Scenario based and Grounded Theory based Domain Specific Modelling Design: a comparison (Bachelorarbeit Wirtschaftsinformatik, in Bearbeitung) Details

    Motivation:

Domain Specific Modelling Languages (DSMLs) reconstruct professional domain terminology (e.g. from finance, or electricity), thereby increasing the expressiveness of domain particulars. By (1) promoting modeling productivity, in that one does not have to reconstruct a domain from scratch, as opposed to general purpose languages, (2) fostering communication, in terms of staying close everyday terminology used by domain experts, (3) fostering domain specific analyses, by abstracting away from unnecessary details, DSMLs increasingly gain in popularity (Voelter et al, 2013). However, being constituted of reconstructions of domain concepts, an important challenge in designing a DSML lies in ensuring its closeness to a domain. DSML approaches go about differently in ensuring this closeness. Particularly, a difference lies here between scenario-based approaches such as (Frank, 2013), and those that reconstruct a DSML from domain data, such as (de Kinderen, 2017).

    Beschreibung:

The purpose of this thesis is to compare two approaches to DSML design: a scenario-driven approach, as exemplified by (Frank, 2017), and a domain data driven approach by means of Grounded Theory, as exemplified by (de Kinderen, 2017). To this end, applies both approaches to design a language, and compares the experience therein. The DSML at hand concerns a domain of choice: this can be security of mobile payment systems, IT infrastructure for the smart grid, or otherwise. Depending on the candidate's experience, the thesis can also scope itself to one of the abovementioned approaches.

ARIS, Archimate, MEMO, For Enterprise Modeling).

  • DevOps Implementation and Business Transition - Identification of Critical Success Factors (Bachelorarbeit Wirtschaftsinformatik, 2021) Details

    Motivation

In many organisations the core value is now being delivered through software. For decades, software was planned/designed, developed and delivered following a rather stable, pre-defined steps. However, the competitive landscape and ever changing requirements, demand higher speed and more flexibility in the way software is delivered. Those features, i.e., among others, increased speed and stability while still delivering value to an enterprise and its customers, are in focus of DevOps, a software development and delivery approach. As the DevOps approach is considered to come of age, the aim of this bachelor thesis is to, based on the literature study, identify main obstacles and main critical success factors (CSFs) of DevOpS implementation and DevOps-based business transition. After proposing a classification of identified CSFs, the bachelor student should also identify possible countermeasures as well as formulate recommendations aiming at increasing the probability of successful DevOps implementation.

  • Comparative Analysis of Enterprise Ontologies (Bachelorarbeit Wirtschaftsinformatik, 2016) Details

    Motivation:

The enterprise modeling (EM) community has recognized ontologies as a promising approach to address some of the challenges the EM field is facing. However, ‘ontology-based enterprise modeling’ requires first the availability of formal ontologies reflecting the various spheres of the enterprises’ action system and IS. Among others, the ontologies should encompass the core context-independent elements of an enterprise, i.e., so called ‘enterprise ontologies’, which are defined as collections “of terms and definitions relevant to business enterprises” (Uschold et al., 1998, p. 31). A number of ontologies to describe an enterprise and/or to support enterprise modeling were created, independently or in relation to existing EM approaches. The earliest ontologies designed to model an enterprise are, e.g., Toronto Virtual Enterprise Ontology (TOVE) (Fox et al., 1998), Enterprise Ontology (Uschold et al., 1998) and Resource-Event-Agent (REA) ontology (Geerts and McCarthy, 2002). Other examples are ORG (W3C Organization Ontology), the Enterprise Ontology (Dietz, 2006), e3-value ontology providing concepts for describing economic exchange among partners (Gordijn and Akkermans, 2001), or a set of organizational ontologies provided within the SUPER project.

    Beschreibung:

The main aim of this work is thus to: investigate the currently existing Enterprise ontologies; devise the comparison framework capturing both their philosophical underpinning as well as, e.g., representation language related aspects, and finally, evaluate the suitability/potential of application of enterprise ontologies in the realm of Enterprise Modeling together/instead of currently applied modeling methods.
